You never really know who's watching you, quietly, behind the curtain before the final scene of a play as you make your exit, stage right. They see you and congratulate you, and you think it's just for the performance. Then you get an email, a text, a compliment, a card in the mail that says, "I've been watching you for years and am in awe. You've inspired me to continue living out my life in fullness."
Yes, I've received a message like this before. And I remember it each time life throws a dart at me. It reminds me of my flexibility, my agility to bob and weave through whatever comes my way.
You might be carrying the weight of not feeling like you're doing enough. Maybe you think you should be more; more visible, more active, more of a solution to the world's pain.
Pause.
Breathe.
Consider this: those compliments people offer you, their thank-yous, their warmth, the way they soften in your presence, these are not just niceties. They are reflections. As a sacred friend spoke to me, they are Divine Mirrors. Evidence that your presence matters and has impact, beyond metrics or milestones.
In my 10+ years as a counselor and therapist, it's those reflections that have kept me grounded and consistently evolving in the field. I have started and stopped this journey so many times that I didn't think I would get here, to actually doing this work on a full-time basis.
The times someone says they felt lighter after we spoke. The slow nods during a pause in session. The stillness that comes after a release.
Dear God(dess)/Universe, I'm here!
Yes, clinically, these moments might fall under the umbrella of a therapeutic conversation, documented and coded for insurance purposes. But the real medicine, the real healing? That comes from the humanity in the room, the sacred exchange between souls, holding sacred space for all emotions without judgment.
I don't just witness grief, anxiety, or longing. I witness the person holding it. And I invite them to witness themselves too, without censoring, without shame or blame. No stigma. No performance.
Presence.
Of course, the licenses, trainings, and certifications are important. They ensure I'm practicing ethically and not causing harm. But what really guides my work is my own consciousness, being Hue-man, Wo-man to Hue-man, my spirit being in relationship with another.
It's spirit-body wisdom. It's ancestral listening. It's honoring the life before me, the lineages that came before that life, and the potential ancestors in front of me. All of it is part of the circle, part of the way we are made to matter.
So I ask you: What does your reflection show? I trust from my experience it shows you matter and you’re here. And are you willing to see it? I mean really see it?
Let the subtle impact of your presence be enough for today. Let your spirit speak in the work you do. You don't have to shout to make a difference. Be still and be true.
I absolutely love the way you expressed how the work you do impacts others but how it positively impacts you in your personal journey and growth! Good stuff!!
